Today, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) announced the endorsement of long-time community leader and 2nd District candidate Cindy Allen for Long Beach City Council. AFSCME is the largest union of public employees in the United States, representing over 1.3 million public sector employees across the country.
In announcing their support, AFSCME President Al Cromer made the following statement:
“Cindy Allen is the only candidate who will always fight for the hardworking men and women of Long Beach, and be a voice for better pay, better health care, and a more secure retirement. Cindy is a strong leader who is passionate about fairness, equity, and the need to improve the lives of working people, especially in marginalized and disenfranchised communities. We are proud to support Cindy Allen for Long Beach City Council.”
Allen also commented on the endorsement:
“AFSCME workers are vital to our society. Without them, our state and local agencies would come to a standstill. Especially now, during this pandemic, they have worked tirelessly to make sure our government functions and we receive the services we need. If I am elected to the City Council, I will work to make sure our current and former public sector employees receive the wages, benefits, and pensions they deserve. I will always recognize the hard work of our public sector employees.”
AFSCME joins a number of prominent labor unions, including the Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Laborers’ International Union of North America, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the International Association of Machinists, in supporting Cindy Allen for City Council.
